On 3 July 2013, Iceland post issued a special cancellation to mark the 40th anniversary of the end of the Westmann Islands volcanic eruption. In 1973, the
Eldfell mountain on the island of Heimaey erupted, forcing the evacuation of the entire population of the island to the main land. The eruption lasted for several months and destroyed a large part of the only town on the island. When it was all over, the area of the island had increased by more than 12 square kilometres.
