Santa Claus postmark, Finland

It's not easy to make out, but the postmark on the right side of the envelope is from Napapiiri: the Arctic Circle. I believe this comes from the Santa Claus Village outside of Rovaniemi, Finland, which is just a few kms south of the Arctic circle. At the top of the postmark you can see Santa Claus in his hat, peeking out over the date. And in the wavy lines to the left you can see a reindeer. It's not very clear but it's there. The round postmark on the left is a Helsinki postmark applied a day after the Santa Claus postmark.

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Beautiful postmark. Yellowknife, capital city of Canada's Northwest Territories, sits on the north shore of Great Slave lake. It's 400km south of the Arctic circle so safe to say there are no polar bears there. But it is a good place to see the northern lights.

Moon Landing Anniversary, Germany

Moon landing souvenir sheet from Germany. My scanner did not pick up the gold lettering though. It came out black. But I was able to get a better angle with my phone to show off the gold foil. Very nice.

The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids

I like these stamps from Germany. The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids was a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. These are charity stamps with the supplement going to the Federal Association of Free Welfare Care (Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Freien Wohlfahrtspflege).

TAAF 2020

Some of the latest TAAF stamps issued by La Poste. Not all of this year's January issues. Just the ones I liked. Particularly the engraved stamps. The Aurora Australis sheet and minerals pair have a varnish applied to give them a shine. The octopus and squid stamps are not my favorite but I like Pierre Denys de Montfort's giant octopus.

Munich, Germany

This one was sent from a Deutsche Post philatelic shop in Munich. The "ps" in the top of the round Munich postmark in the middle of the cover stands for "Philatelie Shop". And then there is the rectangular philatelic shop postmark to the left of that one.

Canada's Chinese New Year Stamp Series

With this year's "Year of the Rat" issue comes the end of the current 12 year Chinese New Year series from Canada Post. I appreciate these souvenir sheets more now that I see them all together like this.

Both of this year's domestic and international rate stamps are embossed and feature foil stamping, although I don't think the domestic rate booklet stamps use foil. I haven't seen them yet. It is a wedding theme with the domestic rate stamp showing the bride being transported to the wedding. The international rate stamps shows the married couple together. The images are done in a folk art style knows as Chinese farmer or peasant painting.

Brazilian Women Who Made History

Three stamps featuring three famous Brazilian women. Hortência Marcari: one of Brazil's greatest basketball players. The queen of Brazilian television Hebe Camargo. And Brazilian samba singer Elza Soares.

This cover took a good beating in the mail. Looks like it was dropped in a puddle or something. But Dr. Fedrizzi uses envelopes made from heavy card stock and it would take much more than rain or a sorting machine mishap to destroy it completely.

King Edward Point, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

Mailed back to me from the King Edward Point research station. The island of South Georgia sits in the Atlantic ocean a little over 1500 km east of the Falkland Islands. The station is operated by the British Antarctic Survey and is home to a staff of just over 20 during the summer months.

Australian Antarctic Territory, Mawson Station

Happy New Year! I received this yesterday from Australia's Mawson Station in East Antarctica and figured I would start the year with it.
