Argentina National Parks

A cover from Buenos Aires with 7500 pesos of postage on it. That's a lot. It's slightly more than the international letter rate for Denmark. Here's a postcrossing thread I came across with a discussion about postage rates in Argentina. Looking back over covers I've received from Argentina in the past, I can see the increases getting larger and larger as the years go by. Inflation is so high in Argentina. The postal rate increase so fast that multiple older stamps are always needed to make the current postage rate.

The stamp on the left is a 2023 stamp that recognizes the National Plan for Telecommunications Networks. It was originally a 2014 stamp that has been overprinted with a new value, going from 50c to $500, The others are all national park definitives from 2023, except the last stamp on the right which is from 2024: Laguna Blanca National Park, Jaramillo Petrified Forest National Park, Federal Campo San Juan Park, and Baritú National Park.

Saint Luigi Orione and the Year of the Ox, Argentina

A Year of the Ox lunar new year sheet on the left. And in the right corner is a stamp commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Don Luigi Orione. This was a joint issue with Italy, The Vatican and The Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The other stamps are National Park definitives with Sierra de las Quijadas National Park on the bottom and Laguna Blanca National Park in the middle.

From Buenos Aires. A 2020 Year of the Rat souvenir sheet on the right. On the left, a stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of Adrienne Bolland's flight over the Andes Mountains. She was the first woman to do so in 1921. And below that is a stamp from a 2019 sheet about dance in Argentina.

Lots of stamps on this little cover from Argentina. The miniature sheet from 2017 on the left commemorates the 200th anniversary of the crossing of the Andes mountains in 1817. In the middle is a stamp commemorating the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Argentina and Bulgaria. The round stamp on the right is from a 2021 miniature sheet that explains solar eclipses. And the two above the address are "Unidad Postal" stamps from a 2019 (I think) series about national parks: Parque nacional Aconquija on the left and Parque Nacional El Leoncito on the right.

Villa La Angostura is an alpine village in Pategonia. It's up in the Andes, sitting inside the Nahuel Huapi National Park, surrounded by mountains and lakes. A beautiful tourist town.

The postmarks on the toucans stamp sheet are from Ramos Mejía: a city on the west side of the greater Buenos Aires area.

This was sent to me on 8 June from Buenos Aires and at the time their international letter rate (small, simple) was $29 pesos. A little less than a month after this was sent the rate was increased to $37 pesos. That's expensive. It costs me half that amount to mail a similar letter internationally from Canada. Postal rates in Argentina seem to have gone up a lot lately. I was planning to send some covers to Argentine Antarctic bases this year but when I saw the postal rates I decided against it.

The large stamp shows the Néstor Kirchner Cultural Centre which opened in May of this year. Named after former president Néstor Kirchner, the building used to be an old Post Office before being turned into the largest cultural center in Latin America. The $6 stamp is from the "festivals" series: "Fiesta Nacional de la Noche Más Larga". The day of the longest night being winter solstice in the southern hemisphere. And I believe the last one is a "regular use" issues from 2014... something to do with graduating from University.

Argentina's Marambio Base, Antarctica

This came back to me from Base Antártica Marambio: the largest of Argentina's Antarctic bases. It's hard to make out the postmarks because of the blue ink. The blue envelope do not help either. On the back is a large cachet with an image of a ship and helicopter... but again, in blue ink and somewhat illegible. Next time I'll send a white envelope.

Marambio base is located on Seymour-Marambio Island, off the tip of the Antarctic peninsula and is actually not that far from Argentina. This is a very large year-round base with an airstrip that services over 100 flights a year.

UPAEP Mailboxes

The UPAEP, Unión Postal de las Américas, España y Portugal or the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal, is similar to PostEurope and just like the Europa series of stamps, the UPAEP has it's own annual joint series that several member nations participate in. In 2011 the common theme was the mailbox. These are the only two examples I have from that series: a pair from Uruguay and a pair from Argentina. I like this series and I plan to add more to my collection.
