The 74 inch reflector telescope at the David Dunlap Observatory in Richmond Hill Ontario was, for a brief time, the second largest telescope in the world and is still the largest telescope in Canada. The observatory went into service in 1935 and was operated by the University of Toronto until 2008. The City of Richmond Hill maintains the site now, mostly for it's historical significance. Light pollution from encroaching urban sprawl put an end to scientific research at the observatory a long time ago. Today there are homes within 200m of the telescope.
