TAAF stamps 2018

These are just a few of the TAAF stamps issued by La Poste on Jan 1 of this year. The "L'Astrolabe" stamp was  actually issued in 2017. I decided to leave it in the image because I like the way it looks. There is a varnish applied to the "Ilmenite" stamps that make the rock and gemstones shine in the light. And the bellies of the parent penguins on the Madrid Protocol sheet have been flocked. I was somewhat disappointed when I saw it was only applied there and not to the actual stamp.

Where can I find postage rates for Antarctica?

On the websites of the postal administrations for the countries those bases send mail through. Google translate helps. Here are a few that were easy to find, assuming a 20g letter sent to Canada:

US is $1.15 USD
Australia is $3 AUD
New Zealand is $2.70 NZD
TAAF is 1.30 euro I think... that's the international rate from France. TAAF is usually the same.
Germany is 0.90 euro
Chile... I've never been able to figure out. It must be at least $600 pesos now. Have to dig harder to find that one.

I sometimes add a little extra to my covers because it can take so long to get down there that the rates increase before they get sent back to me.

You might find something useful on this message board that I recently came across. It's in Spanish.

Any idea where I can find the rates to United Arab Emirates? BTW, which stamps should I use for the US bases?

Jeff said...

To the UAE, should be same as rates I quoted earlier. For US bases use US postage. Sending letters from US bases to non-US addresses requires their international rate: $1.15 USD.

Is the Brazil base operational? / What are shipping rates? / Where can I purchase Brazil Stamps?

Thanks A Lot

I am pretty sure it is still operational. I have seen covers other people have received from the base in the past year. Postage from Brazil to UAE is 4.50 R$ for 20g priority letter. Where to get stamps? No idea. Try ebay or trade with someone from Brazil. Might also be able to use an international reply coupon. I don't know much about those. Haven't used one in a very long time.

Are there any bases in the Arctic that provide philatelic services?

Should the address on the SASE be in English or in the language of the base?

Jeff said...

English has always worked for me.

Should I seal the SASEs?

Jeff said...

Yes, seal the envelopes. Unless you want them to put something inside it.
