Received this cover back from Kerguelen today. It was post marked 29 November 2009, three months ago, in Port-aux-Français. The Kerguelen Islands are part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) located in the Southern Indian Ocean. The French maintain a research base here with an over-winter staff of about 70.
This cover has a label on it and the SD logo on the label is for SuperDARN or Super Dual Auroral Radar Network. This is a large international radar network used to study the upper atmosphere. There are a number of these radar sites all around the world and the site at Kerguelen has been in operation for 10 years now.
